Let us take a gander at what made hands are.
You need to know your lingo and terms, otherwise you cannot know what other people are talking about. Whether in land based casinos, online casinos or online poker rooms. You need to know, you just need to know. There are no whys, hows and whats to discuss. Also if you know poker from inside out you can make your own strategies. Mayhap you make some that no one has ever thought of. Casino players will be impressed, poker players will chant your name and you will be in gambling heaven.
Here are some monster hands;
Two Pair, Three of a kind, Straight, Flush, Full House, Four of a kind, Straight Flush, Royal Flush.
If you play poker even for a small while you will probably know these hands even if you have never had them.
Why do we call above mentioned hands monster, because you will often have the best hand at the table. In combination with excellent play it usually equals excellent money.
You might wonder if single pairs also belong here, and they do. See you are already getting the hang of it. Single pairs are no monster hands but will be clarified in full now. There are two types of single pairs, and those are (drum roll please) Top Pair and Overpair.
Top Pair in detail
You have top pair when one card from the initial hand, that means the two cards you hold, make pair with the highest valued card on the board.
Let’s do an example;
You hold Ajax, Ace and Jack, and the board flops three magnificent cards Four, Jack, Nine.
You hold Top Pair, and on a side note Top Kicker but store this away for later.
Now the flop is done but the treacherous turn and murderous river still need to show themselves. Maybe a King shows his hideous face on the turn and you give Top Pair away to someone with a King.
Overpair in detail
When you are dealt a pair as your initial hand and then on the board there are no cards with the same or higher value. In case of the same valued card showing there haloed face it means you have a set and no longer a pair. Example time:
You hold Flying Nazis, or a pair of Aces which is the same. The board flops the same Four, Jack, Nine of before.
You hold Overpair because there is no card that has the same or higher value than your Nazis.
To clear up some potentially confusing lingo.
Two pair means that you have made a pair with each of your initial cards, and not in the case of two pairs that there is a pair doing business on the board and you happen to have that one other card that lays on the side to make a foursome in total. Some opponents can even make a nice full house, in the latter case. For those who need it, example time:
You hold Ajax and the board flops Ace, Jack, Nine. This case yields Two Pair
You hold Ajax (what again?) and the board flops Ace, Nine, Nine. This yields two pairs.
